Patty Flowerday School of Dance (PFS) was founded in 2011. Miss Patty has been teaching in the Rochester area for the past 35 years in a positive, fun way while focusing on technique, discipline, strength and flexibility that dance requires. Classes are offered for ages 3 to Adult in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Lyric, Modern, Contemporary, and Stretch & Strength as well as fitness classes and personal training.
Patty Flowerday has studied dance since the age of six and has taught all forms of dance. Miss Patty studied dance at Joyce Winters School and SUNY Brockport. She has also studied under many well known teachers such as: Tom Ralabate, Luigi, Frank Hatchett and Cayla Allen to name a few. She has been a Master Jazz teacher for Dance Masters of America and the British Dance Teacher's Association. Parents and students can tell you that Miss Patty gets results from students in a positive, encouraging way. Miss Patty co-owned and operated Dance 22 in Webster NY for 22 years and now has branched off on her own. Miss Patty is an adjudicator for many competitions throughout the USA and Canada. She has published a book through Rhee Gold Standard Press for dance teachers, "Dance Teacher's Helper" which is the first in the series. Miss Patty is a member of Dance Masters of America Chapter #8, and has been for the past 25 years. Miss Patty is certified by test to teach through Dance Masters of America and has completed 6 years of Teacher's Training School at the University of Buffalo. Miss Patty also loves to choreograph musicals and you can usually find her doing that in her spare time. In October 2009 she attended the International Association of Dance and Medical Science (IADAMS) in Cleveland and took multiple classes on how to improve her dancers technique, flexibility and strength. The summer of 2012 Miss Patty attended the World Jazz Congress, taking classes from some of the best "Master Jazz" teachers in the world. Miss Patty is always looking for ways to improve her teaching abilities and loves working with her students. She is also a Youth Minister at Risen Christ Lutheran Church in Fairport.
Monica Starr began her dance training in her hometown of Milford, Delaware at Zwaanendael Dance Academy. She graduated from The Virginia School of the Arts training under the late Petrus Bosman of Royal Ballet. Monica attended summer sessions with North Carolina Dance Theatre, Milwaukee Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Nutmeg Ballet and Alba Dance International in Alba, Italy. She has performed professionally with Milwaukee Ballet II, Rebecca Davis Dance Company, Ballet Theatre of Maryland, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company 2, Ohio Dance Theatre and Deleware Dance Alliance. Favorite classical roles performed include Nikiya from La Bayadere, The Winter Fairy in Cinderella, The Bluebird from Sleeping Beauty, Escamillo, The Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker and Paquita. Monica has also performed contemporary works by Petr Zahradnicek, ShonnaHickman Matlock, Amy Renee Jones, Marlayna Locklear and LeeWei Chao and has recently choreographed her own modern piece for Ohio Dance Theatre titled "To Be". Monica Starr is excited to be joining The New York State Ballet for her first season.
Michelle has been studying dance under Patty Flowerday for the past 16 years and teaching for 5 years. She is excited to be teaching our 3&4 and 5&6 year old classes on Saturday mornings. Michelle has studied tap, jazz, ballet and hip hop and is excited to share her passion and knowledge with some of our littlest dancers!
Sharon Detweiler recently relocated to San Antonio after living in the Midwest, New York, and overseas. She spent a year in England taking a teacher training course at the Royal Academy of Dance and dancing at Danceworks of London as well as two years in South Bend, Indiana, teaching for some of the best schools in the nation. Sharon is a Dance Masters of America certified teacher and a post-graduate of their Teacher Training School at the University at Buffalo. She is a member of The Cecchetti Council of America, American Fitness Professionals and Associates, and Dance Masters of America. Sharon has extensive training in both the Body Control and classical methods of Pilates and is a certified mat work instructor. She has taken teacher training courses with David Howard at Steps on Broadway, Judy Rice at the University at Buffalo, Finis Jhung at the Alvin Ailey School, and spent the past year in an intensive 200 hour Cecchetti training program with master educator Lisa Taylor.
Sharon has been teaching for the past 18 years and during this time has had the opportunity to lecture and instruct at numerous colleges, high schools, conservatories, companies and studios throughout New York, Indiana, Michigan, Massachusetts and Texas. Some of the schools she has taught for include the Conservatory of Dance, under the direction of Ballet Chicago alumnus Lydia Aurinko-Mostow, Southold Dance Theatre under the direction of American Ballet Theatre alumnus Erika Fischbach, Citadel Dance Center under the direction of Paul Taylor alumnus Eileen Cropley as well as The University of Notre Dame. She is a master teacher for the National Association of Dance and Affiliated Arts and a judge for dance competitions. Sharon served as the Director of Ballet at Dance 22 for eight years, training all levels of dancers, several who are now dancing professionally in companies and on television. She currently teaches throughout San Antonio. Miss Sharon will be joining whenever she is in town.
Miss Marcia Vanderlee is a graduate from the College at Brockport, Miss Marcia has presented her work nationally at Cornell University and Salisbury University and has studied with many professionals in the dance and music field. She is a member of Khalid Saleem’s personal group, Percussion ah Saleem, as well as an active member of Sankofa African Drum and Dance Ensemble and Mounafanyi Percussion and Dance Ensemble. In addition to studying with nationally and internationally renowned artists at the College at Brockport, Miss Marcia has also participated in the American Dance Festival (ADF). Miss Marcia teaches dance to children with developmental disabilities with Together Including Every Student (TIES). She is committed and passionate about the arts and is thrilled to be sharing her love of dance and drumming with the community. Miss Marcia has a Master of Science in Recreation and Leisure with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation and also holds a Bachelors of Science in Dance and Physical Education. We are thrilled to have Miss Marcia join our staff at PFS. Miss Marcia is also a former student of Miss Patty's!
Jessica studied dance under Patty Flowerday in her early teens, but gave up dancing in high school. Five years ago, she took her first Zumba class and was immediately hooked! Zumba is a fun and invigorating workout, blending exercise and dance, set to an energizing and uplifting soundtrack. Jessica became a licensed Zumba instructor in 2013 and has been teaching steadily ever since. Join us at the studio for our weekly dance fitness party, Wednesdays from 7:00-8:00pm! Fun for all fitness and dance levels!
Miss Tanessa's dance career began at the Brenda Burlow School of Dance in Ontario, NY where she danced from age 3-9. In 1993, she began studying with Patty Flowerday, as well as many other fantastic teachers including Cayla Allen and Robin Brawley. She danced and sang competitively in groups and as a soloist. In 2003, Miss Tanessa attended the California Pacific College for the Performing Arts in Corona, California. During this time, she participated in outreach tours with the world renowned "Young Americans," sharing her passion for dancing and singing with youths all around the country. After returning to upstate New York, Miss Tanessa continued to study with and teach for Miss Patty at Dance 22. Destiny led her back to the Rochester area in 2013, and to Patty Flowerday School of Dance and Fitness. Miss Tanessa is well-rounded in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, and hip-hop. She feels truly blessed to be able to continue to share her knowledge of and passion for dance with all her students. She also loves writing music, anything purple, cats, helping to build cool cars, and choreographing just for fun.
Stephanie is delighted to be sharing her love of dance with students for her sixth year of teaching dance! Stephanie has been dancing for more than twenty years, eight of them as part of the competitive dance team with Patty Flowerday in Webster, New York. During this time, she completed eight years of extensive private study in ballet, pointe, and lyrical, and took classes with dozens of master teachers from around the US and Canada. As a competitive dancer, Stephanie has received numerous awards, won scholarships, and has been recognized by Dance Masters of America for excellence in tap, jazz, ballet and lyrical. She performed as a company member and soloist of the Geneseo Dance Ensemble for four years, and is the recipient of several dance scholarships through the Dance Department at SUNY Geneseo. Graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Geneseo in May 2014, Stephanie acquired her B.S. Degree in Education, through the Childhood and Special Education program with a concentration in Dance. Throughout the following year, Stephanie attended graduate school at SUNY Geneseo, and recently attained her M.S. Degree in Education, through the Reading and Literacy program. Stephanie is a nationally certified dance instructor through Dance Masters of America in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Modern. Stephanie is a second grade teacher in West Irondequoit and recently got married!
Miss Whitney Thackray studied dance at several studios in the Rochester area including Fitzsimmons Dance Factory, Pittsford Academy of Dance, and Little Red Academy of Dance. Miss Whitney competed locally and nationally, and won several awards for her character performances in her high school years. Miss Whitney continued to dance throughout her university years, and graduated from the University of Rochester in 2005. Miss Whitney has two daughters, age 5 and 1, who follow in her dancing footsteps. After having children, Whitney began a journey into Barre Pilates where she expanded her knowledge of the body and ballet. She is currently tutoring at a local home school co-operative and mentors first grade children at church. She adores working with younger students and is talented at making learning experiences loving and fun!
